PRESS COUNCIL OF INDIA INVITES CLAIMS FOR ITS RECONSTITUTION FOR THE NINTH TERM

The three-year term of the present members of the Press Council of India expires on May 21, 2004. The Council is to be reconstituted for its ninth term with effect from May 22, 2004. Of its 28 members, excluding the Chairman, twenty have to be nominated in accordance with the procedure set out in Press Council (Procedure for Nomination of Members) Rules, 1978 as amended on June 18, 1999 read with Section 5 of the Press Council Act, 1978.

For this purpose the Press Council of India is inviting national level registered associations of the categories of Editors, Working Journalists, and Owners and Publishers of newspapers and news agencies to file their respective claims for notification (or for renotification of those who had been notified in 2001), by the Press Council under sub-section (4) of Section 5 of the Press Council Act, 1978, for its ninth three year term as representative associations having inter alia All India Character with the minimum of six years existence and being registered for not less than six months under the relevant laws. The last date of filing the claim is September 15,2003 (till 5.p.m).

The Notice inviting the claims has been released as advertisement to the prominent newspapers throughout the country and also placed in the official website of the Council (http://presscouncil.nic.in).
